Political Dialogues in Perceforest

Résumé

As they have a whole kingdom to rebuild and organize, the kings who rule in Perceforest’s romance are to take decisions with the help of their men and their knights. A good vassal has the duty to give advices to his lord and a good lord should listen to him. Therefore, the feodal councils are one of the topics of the romance that rhythm the story, and their form and their content can explain to us some of the ideological conceptions of the work. Indeed, as the content of the councils will show what is considered as an important matter of discussion, at the same time, this disposition of the characters’ lines will enlighten about the ideological portrayal of a group as well as the individuals within a group. The form adopted by the debate is representative of how power struggles are conceived within the group.
