Le roman de Perceforest : de l’humiliation à l’humilité
Résumé
During the Middle Ages, public humiliation seems to have been widely used as a social regulator. At that time, vulnerable individuals could be mocked mercilessly and convicted with a violence that is judged degrading nowadays. Then, the condition of a woman or a man was considered a direct consequence of a sin committed against God or a blessing from the heavens. The former needed to be expiated whilst the latter was cause for celebration. Written at the Burgundy court during the 15th century, the romance Perceforest is proof of the fear of humiliation among the aristocratic class, completely focused on honour. The author Perceforest integrate that fear in his/her romance, deliberately putting his/her characters through the ordeal of humiliation. The predicament they suffer remind us of rituals and subverted rules from the carnival that create chaos to consolidate social order. However, this romance shapes their sufferings into a narrative mechanics that transform humiliation into humility and prepare the advent of Christianity.
La réalité médiévale semble avoir largement utilisé le processus d'humiliation comme régulateur social. Voyant l'état de chaque individu comme le reflet d'un péché à expier ou d'une grâce à célébrer, la société se moque sans compassion des plus faibles ou des condamnés soumis à une violence à nos yeux dégradante. Le Roman de Perceforest, écrit au xve siècle à la cour de Bourgogne, montre, par les épreuves qu’il inflige à certains personnages, la hantise de l’humiliation dans le milieu aristocratique, tout entier tendu vers l’honneur. Les humiliations que les personnages subissent rappellent les rituels de régulation carnavalesque qui créent un chaos pour mieux remettre de l’ordre dans le monde social. Toutefois ce roman oriente leurs souffrances dans une logique narrative qui fait de l’humiliation la voie de l’humilité et participe à l’avènement du christianisme.
