Una diplomacia cultural transpacífica.
Résumé
The People's Republic of China was determined to break the diplomatic blockade that the United States and Taiwan had imposed on it since 1949. Lacking international recognition, increasingly dependent on the USSR and subject to constant threats in Asia and the rest of the world, the PRC sought to extend support to the new communist regime by exporting and exchanging ideologies, information and art in order to make a place for itself in the postwar world. As I argue in the following pages, the PRC elaborated and implemented a trans-Pacific cultural diplomacy that can be traced and studied through its relations with Colombia between 1952 and 1977. This period covers the years between the 1952 Asia-Pacific Basin Peace Congress (the first international event organized by the PRC after 1949), and the beginning of the policy of reform and opening up initiated by Deng Xiaoping in 1976 known as Boluan Fanzheng.
La República popular china se empeñó en romper el bloqueo diplomático que Estados Unidos y Taiwán le habían impuesto desde 1949. País carente de reconocimiento internacional, cada vez más dependiente de la URSS y sometido a constantes amenazas en Asia y el resto del mundo, la RPC buscó ampliar el apoyo al nuevo régimen comunista exportando e intercambiando ideologías, información y arte para hacerse un lugar en el mundo de la posguerra. Como lo sostengo en las siguientes páginas, la RPC elaboró y puso en marcha una diplomacia cultural transpacífica que puede rastrearse y estudiarse a través de sus relaciones con Colombia entre 1952 y 1977. Ese periodo abarca los años comprendidos entre el Congreso de Paz de Asia y la Cuenca del Pacífico de 1952 (el primer evento internacional organizado por la RPC después de 1949), y el inicio de la política de reformas y apertura iniciada por Deng Xiaoping en 1976 conocida como Boluan Fanzheng.
