Les nouvelles technologies au service des enfants porteurs de troubles du spectre de l’autisme : Le travail de l’imitation avec le robot Nao

Résumé

The objective of the present study was to assess the effectiveness and check the use of the Nao robot in imitation exercises for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Five children with a diagnosis of ASD were recruited by the Autism Day Unit at Alpes-Isere Hospital (Saint-Egrève, France). In the preliminary phase of the study, the children’s motor and verbal imitation abilities were respectively assessed by monitoring their body movements and administering the echoic assessment from the Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program. Three children scored too high in this evaluation, and were withdrawn from the study. Two boys (respectively aged 5 years and 6 months and 6 years and 10 months) were selected for the imitation exercises and the post-exercise evaluation. Each boy completed 10 imitation sessions with the Nao robot. The two children were then evaluated using the same procedure and items as in the preliminary phase. Our results showed that the two boys’ respective imitation abilities did not change to the same extent; one of the boys improved his verbal and motor imitation abilities, whereas the other did not. We discuss possible explanations for this difference. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2021 APA, all rights reserved)
