Investigating the military field

This article focuses on the methodological problems encountered in the qualitative study of the defence field. It is based on research on the European Defence and Security Policy, especially the role of French and German officers and diplomats, in its design and implementation. It first addresses the qualitative research strategy and the questions it raises regarding the specificity of military discourse. This raises the question of how to interview defense agents (mostly military officers and diplomats), and encourage them to talk without leading them to breach their duty of confidentiality. The second issue addressed is how to construct a comparative research design. The last issue discussed by this article is reflexivity, and more precisely of the position of the researcher in his or her dialogue with military officers. What does reflexivity mean, and how does it affect the research being conducted. This issue of reflexivity is twofold. The first aspect is the position of the researcher as a civilian academic person: this raises the problem of the specific languages used by the military and the academicians. The second aspect is the impact of the gender of the researcher in what is a predominantly masculine sphere.
Cet article traite des problèmes méthodologiques rencontrés dans la recherche qualitative sur le domaine militaire. Il est fondé sur une recherche sur la politique européenne de défense et de sécurité, portant en particulier sur le rôle des officiers et des diplomates français et allemands dans sa conception et sa mise en œuvre. Il aborde en premier lieu la stratégie de recherche qualitative et les questions que cela soulève, étant donné la spécificité du discours militaire. Cela soulève la question du comment interviewer des agents de la défense (pour la plupart officiers militaires et diplomates) et les encourager à parler, sans les amener à rompre leur devoir de confidentialité. Le second problème est de savoir comment construire une recherche comparative. Le dernier problème abordé dans cet article est celui de la réflexivité, et plus précisément la position du chercheur ou de la chercheuse dans son dialogue avec les officiers militaires. Que signifie la réflexivité et comment cela affecte-t-il la recherche en train de se faire? Ce problème de la réflexivité a deux aspects. Le premier est la position du chercheur, en tant que civil et universitaire: ceci soulève le problème des langages particuliers utilisés par les militaires et les universitaires. Le second est l’effet du genre du chercheur dans un monde principalement masculin.
