Fragestellung: Wieland gegen den Kosmopolitismus der Aufklärung?
Commenting on a Parisian literary controversy in 1781, Wieland took a seemingly negative view of French translations of German literature at the time. His point of view is in fact the result of complex and careful reflection and remains entirely in line with the cosmopolitanism of the Enlightenment. At the end of his life, Wieland was also opposed to the proto-nationalism of the first German Romantics.
