Since 2018, public investment in research in the United Kingdom has been centralized in a new public body sponsored by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy: UK Research and Innovation. Since the UK left the European Union, the Government has announced an increase in public funding and set ambitious targets, but the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee has considered these difficult to achieve. Although participation of the United Kingdom in EU programmes was enshrined in the Trade and Cooperation Agreement, the Protocol has not yet been adopted and the participation seems to be contingent on the ongoing negotiations regarding the Northern Ireland Protocol.

Depuis 2018, le financement public de la recherche est concentré au Royaume-Uni dans un nouvel organisme qui relève du ministère chargé des entreprises, de l’énergie et de l’industrie : UK Research and Innovation. Depuis la sortie de l’Union européenne, le gouvernement a annoncé des augmentations du financement public avec des objectifs ambitieux qui ont été jugés difficilement atteignables par la commission de la science et de la technologie de la Chambre des communes. Bien que la participation du Royaume-Uni aux programmes européens (notamment Horizon Europe) ait été prévue dans l’accord de commerce et de coopération, le protocole n’a toujours pas été adopté et cette participation paraît suspendue aux négociations en cours sur le protocole portant sur l’Irlande du Nord.
