Du bien voir au bien dire (et vice versa) : Les Caractères de La Bruyère ou les exercices du regard

Vestige of an era at the turn of modernity, an era characterized by a profound "transformation of the visible" (Philippe Hamou), La Bruyère's work has un underlying project involving the education of one's look. This is the central objective that underpins the moralist's rhetorical and stylistic options: his decision to ensure the continuity of the tradition of the caractères, but also, in conjunction, to pay his debt to the epigrammatic genre. This intricate relationship between the art of good speaking and the art of good looking also works in the opposite way: if it is true that the textual devices in the Caractères derive from the look, a look that requires and shapes them, the next is also a space for the look to try itself out, to adjust and to sharpen – in one word, to practice.
Témoin d'une époque qui fut, au seuil de la modernité, celle d'une profonde "mutation du visible" (selon la formule de Philippe Hamou), le livre de La Bruyère est tout entier sous-tendu par le projet d'une éducation du regard. C'est à ce dessein central que répondent les options rhétoriques et stylistiques du moraliste: sa décision de s'inscrire dans la tradition des caractères, mais aussi, et concurremment, sa dette à l'égard du genre épigrammatique. Et ce rapport d'étroite intrication entre l'art du bien dire et celui du bien voir n'est pas à sens unique: si le dispositif textuel des Caractères procède du regard qui le requiert et le façonne, il est aussi, en retour, l'espace où ce regard s'essaie, s'ajuste, s'aiguise – en un mot, s'exerce.
