Utilisation d'une mesure indirecte du stéréotype : apport théorique des modèles multinomiaux

Abstract : Indirect measures are central to the study of individual stereotypes and prejudice. However, these measures are not without criticism: contrary to what was previously argued, these measures are now thought to reflect multiple processes covering varying degrees of automaticity. Multinomial models, mathematical models coupled with indirect measures, have the benefit of disentangling the specific contribution of the main processes behind the individual response. The objective of this work was to show the theoretical value that multinomial models may have on stereotyping and prejudice studies. Through the example of an indirect measure of the stereotype linking people from North Africa to a threat, we argued that the processes and the conditional relationship between the processes behind the individual response could vary according to a specific context and the type of participants taking part in the measure. Our first empirical section did not allow us to confirm the possibility that a terrorist attack context could influence in an opposite way two of the processes behind the participant response. In our second empirical section, we showed that the conditional relationship between processes could be linked to some task components, but also and above all to some individual factors. Finally, our last part highlighted the replicability of our effects with other stimuli and with the participants linked to the stereotype, but not in a different geographical context. In sum, this work was an opportunity for us to highlight the need to be cautious when interpreting results from indirect measures as well as the theoretical and empirical contribution of multinomial models in these interpretations.
