Mise en place et cristallisation des massifs grenus et pegmatitoïdiques des volcans de l'Archipel de la Société, Polynésie française: étude texturale, minéralogique et géochimique des roches à texture grossière des îles de Tahiti Nui, Raiatea, Bora Bora et Maupiti

Abstract : This first synthetic study of the coarse grained magmatic rocks from the Society islands results in forming two groups within the five sampled granular and pegmatoidic intrusions: i) the wide and lithologically complex plutonic bodies of Tahiti Nui and Raiatea; ii) the three small intrusions of Bora Bora and Maupiti. In Tahiti Nui, the emplacement of the coarse grained body could have been the cause of the volcano destabilisation, which has preceded the gravity landslide collapse of its northern flank. The richness of the magma in dissolved water at the time of the emplacement governs the crystallisation of the small intrusions; it is at the origin of the textural zoning within the pegmatoidic body of Bora Bora and of the high temperature oxidation/hydroxylation of the olivines from the intrusions of Maupiti. The textural diversity of the studied rocks results in suggesting a new semi-quantitative classification connecting the non-cumulative coarse grained rocks and pegmatoids.
