Le baiser Lamourette (7 juillet 1792)

On July 7, 1792, Adrien Lamourette, constitutional bishop and deputy from the Rhone-et-Loire, gave a speech from the tribune of the Legislative Assembly appealing for union behind the Constitution of 1791. His words prompted warm embraces among the deputies. This episode, often known derisively as the " Kiss of Lamourette " has been neglected in the historiography. How is it possible that in an assembly on the verge of rupture, the intervention of a deputy with few oratorical talents would promote such a reconciliation, however ephemeral? Contemporary interpretations of the event remain contradictory: the participants, it was diversely argued, were guided either by a true desire for peace or by duplicity. The writings of Lamourette shed new light on this incident, and reveal how, under the pressure of events, the orator himself came to modify his interpretation of the episode
Le 7 juillet 1792, Adrien Lamourette, évêque constitutionnel et député de Rhône-et-Loire, prononce à la tribune de la Législative un discours appelant à l'union autour de la Constitution de 1791. Ses propos suscitent des embrassades. Cet épisode, souvent moqué sous le nom de " baiser Lamourette ", est resté négligé par l'historiographie. Comment expliquer qu'au sein d'une Assemblée alors au bord de la rupture, l'intervention d'un député peu doué de talents oratoires déclenche une telle réconciliation, certes éphémère ? Les interprétations contemporaines de l'événement sont contradictoires : les acteurs seraient guidés tantôt par une véritable volonté de paix, tantôt par la duplicité. Les écrits de Lamourette apportent une lumière nouvelle et révèlent comment, sous la pression des événements, l'orateur lui-même en vient progressivement à modifi er son interprétation de l'épisode.
