Espace et verticalité dans les paysages mémoriels de Chateaubriand, Nabokov et Sebald

Abstract : This article compares three writers of memory, Chateaubriand, Nabokov and Sebald. For these authors, space becomes an image of time, through the description of memorial landscapes, real or allegorical. The article identifies a predilection for verticality in the representation of these landscapes and shows its multiple symbolic meanings. Using specific examples taken from their autobiographical or fictional works, it illustrates the evolution in the representation of memory from one writer to the other.
