Wagnon travaille comme chercheur dans l'unité de recherche GREAT ICE de l'IRD (Glaciers et Ressources en Eau des Andes Tropicales ; Indicateurs Climatiques et Environnementaux) et est accueilli dans l'Equipe Glaciers du LGGE. Dans ce cadre, il a participé à un carottage de glace au Chimborazo (Equateur) (Novembre-Décembre Afin d'aider à l'interprétation des carottes de glace andines, P. Wagnon dirige un programme qui vise à étudier spécifiquement les processus se produisant à l'interface air/neige en menant simultanément une expérimentation météorologique de bilans d, p.0, 2000. ,
Wagnon s'occupe de gérer les stations météorologiques de bilan d'énergie installées sur les glaciers Zongo (Bolivie) et Antizana (Equateur) Les données recueillies sur le glacier Zongo sont traitées par J.E. Sicart qui terminera sa thèse début, thèse dirigée par Pierre Ribstein et en partie encadrée par P. Wagnon. Les données du glacier Antizana vont servir à la thèse de Vincent Favier qui a débuté en octobre, 2001. ,
Wagnon est responsable de la partie bilan d'énergie du projet PNRH 0 1 -37 intitulé Dynamique de la couverture neigeuse des Andes tropicales et coordonné par P. Chevallier (IRD, Great Ice) Depuis octobre 2001, une station météorologique fonctionne non loin du glacier Zongo, sur une zone morainique. Cette station vise à mesurer le bilan d'énergie de la couverture neigeuse intermittente qui couvre les moraines en saison humide, Cette station fournit toutes les données d'entrée du modèle CROCUS de Météo France qui sera testé sur cette zone ,
