Qu'est-ce que l'enseignement ? : Quelques conditions nécessaires et suffisantes de cette activité

Abstract : Researchers on philosophy of education as well as on the line of research call “study of teaching” have been working for a long time at defining the notion of teaching. More recently, several research fields like developmental psychology or ethology gathered new sets of data about this activity. In this paper we first take an inventory of definitions of the teaching activity, then we propose a more comprehensive list of the necessary and sufficient conditions for teaching to be. The notions of language, intentionality, goals and beliefs attribution, cooperation, on-line assessment and learning environment modification are introduced in relation to teaching and explored in turn. Finally, we propose a synthesis of these definitions leading to a more accurate definition of what is teaching.
